Genesee Spanish Teacher to be Honored by YWCA

“West
Genesee High School Spanish teacher Marcia Ranieri will
receive the YWCA’s Academy of Diversity Achievers Award.
She will receive the award at the Day of Commitment Luncheon
on April 23 at the Nicholas J. Pirro Convention Center in Syracuse.
“The award goes to someone who has participated in programs that promote
and embrace diversity, engage in activities to eliminate racism, and support
opportunities for women’s growth and leadership. At West Genesee, Ranieri
has worked with conflict mediation groups, shared-decision making teams and
has facilitated a diversity dialogue group.
“Ranieri is a West Genesee graduate and has taught Spanish for seven
years. She will serve as summer school principal this summer and is pursuing
her administrative certificate from Syracuse University.”

Middle School Teacher Honored by Technology Group

“School
science teacher Richard Chapman will
receive an Outstanding Teacher Award from the Technology Alliance
of Central New York. The award goes to teachers who inspire their
students to study science, math and technology, and they integrate
those subjects into extracurricular activities, exhibits and competitions.
“Chapman has made an award-winning Web site through Blackboard for his
students and their parents to use. He works with the school science fair and
a rocketry program at the Museum of Science and Technology.
“He will be recognized at the 20th annual Technology Alliance Outstanding
Teacher Awards Banquet, slated for May 2. He will receive a $1,000 prize, which
he said he wants to use to purchase a SmartBoard for the middle school.”

Grooms, Stonehedge B, ran in the Walt Disney
World Marathon on January 13th. It was her first marathon and,
in addition, she raised money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma society.

Art Exhibit
Anna
Mayerhofer (art teacher at WGMS) will have
a solo art exhibit of her work at St. John Pottery & Fine
Crafts, 24 E. Genesee Street, Baldwinsville. The opening is
scheduled for Sunday, January 13th. Items on exhibit include
figure drawings, paintings, collages and pastels. The shop
is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Book Published
Mary
Humphrey( librarian at Split Rock) just had
her second book published. It’s called: Kids Yoga
Book of Feelings. The book is only available online right
now but soon to be in stores. Also, she has been selected as
a pilot recipient of “ Picturing America” the newest
initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The
program will introduce students to some of America’s
greatest masterpieces of art.

Conference in Syracuse. The Conference theme was “Powerful
Partnerships for Success.” The workshop presented, titled “Collaboration
and Community Partnerships” shared the outcome of a project-based
learning activity that Jan and Susan collaborated on in which
7W English students read the novel Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman,
and then planted 120 “Gardens in a Bucket” with
the help of a WG Teaching Center Pet Project grant. These “gardens” were
then donated to the Food Bank of Central NY for distribution
to families in several Central NY counties, allowing these
students to connect with the community in a very meaningful
way.

Anne
Sierotnik, a high school English teacher in
West Genesee, was one of 5 finalists named by the New York
State Education Department for NYS Teacher of the Year. Anne
is a mentor to other teachers and is extremely active in
her community. She has organized class activities to benefit
local, state and national charities, including the Camillus
Food Pantry, Hurricane Katrina relief and the Make-A-Wish
Foundation.

Actually WAS Rocket Science
Rick
Chapman, WGMS science teacher,
was among 265 teachers from around the world attending a
teacher's Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center,
in Huntsville, Alabama. The program included astronaut training
activities, practicing aviation rescues and simulating repairs
in space.
